Protocol for Baptism Outside of Mass

  • Parents and godparents are asked to sit in the front row of pews.
  • The Commentator will welcome parents, godparents, family and friends to the celebration.
  • The Commentator requests the parents and godparents to come forward next to the near the steps of the altar to name the children.
  • Parents and godparents approach the Priest who asks them to name their children and then claim the children by signing them with the cross after accepting responsibility of raising them in the faith.
  • The parents and godparents return to their seats to listen to God’s Word. The First Reading and the Responsorial Psalm are read by the Commentator. The Celebrant reads the Gospel and delivers a homily.
  • The Commentator leads the Prayers of the Faithful.
  • The Renunciation of Sin and the Profession of the Faith is led by the Priest/Deacon.
  • The Priest/Deacon presides over the Blessing of the Water (or renewal).
  • The parents are asked “Is it your decision to have your child baptized?” The parents and godparents answer “yes” and are invited to come to the water, family by family.
  • After pouring the water on the foreheads of the children, the Priest/Deacon anoints the children with Holy Chrism.
  • Godparents are invited to come forward and take a candle and light it from the Paschal Candle and joins the respective families.
  • The Our Father is recited by all.
  • Mothers are asked to come forward with their children for a blessing.
  • Fathers are asked to come forward with their children for a blessing.
  • Baptismal certificates are distributed to each of the families.
  • Thanksgiving Donation envelopes are placed on the Baptismal Table or handed to the Commentator or the Priest/Deacon.
  • The Priest/Deacon is available for pictures following the ceremony.
